Mid Spring Checklist

Early spring was the time to prep, prune, and plant, so now is the time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor, right? Well, maybe, but there’s still more to do to keep your lawn and garden ready for the hot summer months ahead. We’ve compiled a brief list for your use to stay on track and ensure the health and prosperity of your lovely buds and bulbs.

Succulent

Prep for new summer buds

A great way to guarantee constant color through the seasons is to introduce complementary shrubs that will bloom throughout the season. Work on learning a few new flowers a week until you’re comfortable introducing new flowers to your garden.

Put the bird feeders away

Take down the bird feeders and store them away until fall or even winter.  ”How heartless!” you might exclaim, but we advise this for good reason. Feeding birds is most helpful when natural sources of seed are scarce, such as late winter or early spring. Birds need most energy when they are migrating or during extreme temperatures.

Enjoy the spring show

Take a seat and enjoy either yours or your neighbor’s hard work when the buds bloom and blossom all around you. At the very least, resolve to plan ahead for next year’s show and map out those garden beds.

Plant hardy annuals

Although annuals don’t typically last more than 6 months, they are easy to grow and their aesthetic is very rewarding. You can start sowing these from late February to early April; they can survive a light frost, but anything lasting will do them in quickly. If you are planting them before April, it’s better to start them inside, and transplant them outside after germination. This will allow them to survive outside in the case of any unexpected frosts.

Apply mulch

Mulch has extensive benefits, but one of your favorites (just guessing here) is the almost-no-weeding aspect of it. Throw some weed barrier cloth under the mulch to hinder weed growth even more, and prevent decomposition of underlying mulch. Just think–less hours weeding means more hours swimming!

For the perfect garden bed, get your drainage and irrigation checked up by your local experts—Rainy Days! Be the envy of your neighbors.

Disease Overview

Brown patch, or Rhizoctonia Blight, is a lawn disease that becomes active in hot and humid weather. These somewhat circular patches can range from several inches in diameter to 3 feet, leaving behind a circle of brown grass. In older patches with this disease, the center of the grass will sometimes grow back, leaving a frog-eye appearance.

These symptoms can appear overnight when environmental conditions are right. On the outer edges of the patch, you might see a “smoke ring,” a blue-grayish ring that shows the reaction of the grass as it progresses outward to new grass. This ring usually looks water-soaked. This grass fungus also produces mycelium, a substance that looks like a cobweb which will show up in early mornings when dew is present.

Your grass will eventually grow out of this disease as long as it only affects the blade. If it spreads to the crown, however, it will die. Younger lawns stand a significantly smaller chance of surviving this disease.

Factors that favor lawn diseases:

  • Overnight temps stay above 70
  • Daytime temps stay above 85
  • Humidity greater than 86%
  • Abundant rainfall
  • Excessive irrigation
  • Soil stays damp 10+ hours/day
  • Over-fertilized lawns
  • Quick release, water-soluble fertilizers (i.e. ammonium nitrate)

Proper drainage in the landscape is just as important as proper irrigation. Excess water in the landscape can lead to some common issues. Improper drainage behind retaining walls can weaken the integrity of the wall and lead to catastrophic failure. Many drainage issues have simple solutions.

Signs of Common Landscape Drainage Problems:

Excessive water not only affects your landscapes but it can also cause issues in and around your home or business, such as:

  • Mildew/Mold in Crawlspaces and Basements
  • Settling Foundations
  • Loss of Plant Material
  • Insect Problems
  • Mechanical Damage from Mowing Equipment/Footprints
  • Soil Compaction
  • Standing Water or Puddles
  • Yellow Grass or Plants that Wilt or Appear Unhealthy

Simple Solutions to Your Drainage Problems:

  • French Drains - A French drain is a trench filled with gravel or rock that redirects surface water and groundwater away from an area.
  • Catch Basins - Catch basins are designed to drain excess rain and ground water from lawns and gutters.
  • Gutter Down Spout Piping - Water collected by a rain gutter is fed usually with a downspout or downpipe from the roof to the base of the structure where it is directed away from the home or building.
  • Sump Pump Installation - Sump pumps remove water that has accumulated in a basin, commonly found in the basement of homes. However, wherever there is puddling water, a sump pump can redirect water away from problem areas.

After your consultation, Rainy Days Irrigation can design and install a complete drainage system to handle all of the water in your landscape.

Rainy Days Jonathan Bielert Fundraiser

Jonathan Bielert Fundraiser

Jonathan received his official diagnosis of Vascular Ehlers Dandros Syndrome (EDS), a rare genetic disease. He has many doctors at Duke but his Geneticist works closely with the Geneticist (Expert) at Johns Hopkins, so he is kept up to date with the latest research; however, there is no cure or treatment at this time.

Jonathan is currently getting disability through Rainy Days and is expecting to hear something from Social Security Disability soon. Jonathan was also able to obtain affordable health insurance through the Marketplace, even though the deductibles are very high and their out of pocket expenses will be a challenge. His wife, Danielle, recently began working with Lowes Home Improvement in the Garden Department. She has also accepted a part-time Customer Service Representative position which pays much better and she will be starting in a week.

Jonathan and Danielle, have met and devised a plan for the EMS Station that details specifics on how to handle an emergency should Jonathan need to be transported to a hospital. There are certain standard procedures that cannot be done on Jonathan and failure to comply with these directions could cost Jonathan his life in the event of an emergency.

The three children have been tested for EDS and they are expecting the results of the tests within the next few weeks. Jonathan spends his time with his family. He has gained back to his original 160 pounds. Some days he does really well and some days are extremely difficult with pain and other symptoms related to this disease.  On the good days, he enjoys working on projects around the house. He built his daughter a night stand and recently completed a chicken coup. On March 1st, they added to their family by bringing home chickens and are ready for fresh eggs. Jonathan and his daughter are also enjoying 4-H together. His garden is plowed and ready for planting. He recently posted a picture of his garden with a message, “Alright spring. I’m ready whenever you are, so hurry up.”

Through the donations that you have given, Jonathan and his family have done well from a monthly budget standpoint. They were even able to pay off most of last year’s debt.

Right now, their biggest financial burden lies with the deductibles and expenses related to their health care for 2014. In time, a treatment will be found. Right now, Jonathan has to be attentive to his body and know when to stop and when to seek medical assistance until a treatment and/or cure can be found.

Danielle wanted to tell everyone how much the donations have helped them. “Through our worst days we never went hungry, cold or unclothed. I am forever grateful for the kindness people showed to our little family. Hopefully we can keep our dreams alive and learn how to live this life without a multitude of tears every day! Reality is hard to accept. Yesterday our oldest son held Jon’s hand a little too tight and caused a vein to bleed, turn his hand purple and swollen which caused him to be in pain for hours, just a child holding his finger. Thank you again for all you have done. We are blessed!”  Danielle

Tips for Maintaining Landscape Lighting

The winter months can take a toll on your landscape lighting.  It is important to check your lights periodically to keep them burning brightly.

First, it is important to keep the lenses of the lights clean from dirt and debris. In cases of ice and snow, you will want to clear your light fixtures out from under any accumulation.  Remember to be gentle as you clear away ice and snow to avoid breakage or damage to your lights.  Also, a broom can be used to gently brush away snow on lights that are above ground.

If any bulbs are burnt out they will need to be replaced.

Also, it is important to maintain the proper angle of your lighting fixtures.  Sometimes wind, hail, and rain can cause fixtures to shift position.  By re-positioning the fixtures, the lighting can be redirected to the correct places.

These tips will help to keep your landscape lighting working properly and improve your curb appeal.

Some of these landscape lighting tips are fairly easy to handle on your own.  However, some services need to be handled by a professional. Rainy Days Landscape Lighting offers regular maintenance service contracts.  These maintenance service contracts include checking voltage balance, resetting the timer, replacing burnt bulbs, re-positioning fixtures, re-burying wires, cleaning lenses, and clearing out debris.  Give them a call and keep your system running at peak performance.
