Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd each year and was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. It was intended to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution.

Some people prefer to observe Earth Day around the time of the March equinox. American anthropologist Margaret Mead added her support for the equinox Earth Day in 1978. She supported this particular observance time throwing her support behind John McConnell, another supporter of Earth conservation and whom coined the phrase, “Earth Day.” McConnell was a man with a passion for peace, religion and science throughout his life.

Whenever you chose to observe Earth Day, it’s goal is to inspire awareness of and appreciation for earth’s environment and calls for the protection of our planet. Every day should be Earth Day.

What are you going to do to commemorate Earth Day?

Here are some ideas:

  • Plant a tree, or flowers. Clean air!
  • Reuse and recycle. Re-purpose materials. Conserve!
  • Clean up litter. Adopt a highway. Keep ditches and creeks trash-free.
  • Buy, or make earth-friendly products. Chemical-free products.
  • Ride your bike instead of driving a car. Reduce air pollution.
  • Conserve water. Use sparingly in house and yard.
  • Conserve energy. Update your lighting and appliances to ‘Energy Star.’

Simple changes can make a big difference. Make every day Earth Day. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Save energy, water, and money with Rainy Days on your side. Preventative maintenance services are provided by our skilled technicians. Conservation is important to us! Give us a call today. (919) 779-9285

The March equinox, aka: the first day of Spring, marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator – from south to north. This happens on March 19, 20 or 21 every year. For our area, Raleigh, NC, the first day of Spring is on March 20th, 2015 at 6:45 p.m.

Spring in the north, fall in the south

  • Equinoxes and solstices are opposite on either side of the equator, and the March equinox is also known as the ”spring (vernal) equinox” in the northern hemisphere and as the ”autumnal (fall) equinox” in the southern hemisphere.

Why is it called “equinox”?

  • On the equinox, night and day are nearly exactly the same length – 12 hours – all over the world. This is the reason it’s called an “equinox”, derived from Latin, meaning “equal night”. However, in reality equinoxes don’t have exactly 12 hours of daylight

What happens on the equinox?

  • The Earth’s axis is always tilted at an angle of about 23.5° in relation to the ecliptic, the imaginary plane created by the Earth’s path around the Sun. On any other day of the year, the Earth’s axis tilts a little away from or towards the Sun. But on the two equinoxes, the tilt of the Earth’s is neither away from nor towards the Sun. In fact, it is perpendicular to the Sun’s rays, like the illustration shows.

Celebrating new beginnings

  • The March equinox has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth in the Northern Hemisphere. Many cultures celebrate spring festivals and holidays around the March equinox, like Easter and Passover.

New beginnings also apply to your lawn and garden. Give us a call today atRainy Days Irrigation to help you “Spring into Spring” with a beautiful yard.

March is often associated with the holiday, St. Patrick’s Day.

This holiday was first celebrated in the U.S. on March 17, 1737, honoring the Irish patron saint, St. Patrick. The holiday was organized by the Charitable Irish Society of Boston and included a feast and a religious ceremony. The celebrations are Irish culture themed and typically consist of wearing green, parades, eating and drinking. Welcome to March! Don’t forget to move your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, 3/8.

Here are 8 facts you may not know about Daylight Saving Time:

1. It’s “daylight saving time,” not “daylight savings time.”
Many people render the term’s second word in its plural form. However, since the word “saving” acts as part of an adjective rather than a verb, the singular is grammatically correct. (more…)
